Dual N-Back — free online memory game
About this game
Two streams run at once — a square lighting up on a grid, and a spoken letter. Your job: notice when either stream repeats from exactly N steps ago. It is demanding, it is famous, and it is the task used in most working-memory training research.
How to play Dual N-Back
- 1Two streams run at once: a lit square (position) and a letter.
- 2Press POSITION MATCH if the square is where it was N steps ago; LETTER MATCH if the letter repeats from N steps ago. Keys: A / L.
- 3Score 80%+ on a block to level up N. Two failed blocks end the run.
What Dual N-Back trains
Dual n-back trains working-memory updating: holding, comparing and overwriting two mental traces every few seconds. That is the same juggling your mind does while following a conversation in a noisy room or doing mental arithmetic. The adaptive rule — 80% accuracy to level up — keeps you pinned at the edge of your capacity, where training works.

Tip: Start at N=2 (the research standard). Even N=4 is a serious workout.
What n-back level should I start at?
Start at N=2, the standard in research studies. Most people find dual 2-back hard for the first few sessions, plateau at 3, and treat 4 as a serious achievement. Consistency beats pushing N too early.
Does dual n-back make you smarter?
The honest answer: it reliably makes you better at n-back and similar working-memory tasks, and the 2008 Jaeggi study reported transfer to fluid reasoning — but later studies found the transfer smaller and less consistent. It is the best-exercised working-memory workout available; treat IQ gains as a possibility, not a promise.
Is Dual N-Back free?
Yes — Dual N-Back is completely free, with no account, no signup and no downloads. Scores are saved privately in your browser, and you can install MemoryGames as an app from your browser menu if you want it on your home screen.
